Tourism industry is turning a new leaf. If till some years back, tourism was often accused of being unconcerned with the ecology of a destination, today responsible tourism is taking lead in protecting our natural resources. Mexican government is also focused on responsible and ethical tourism as it is the mainstay of the economy.

Mexican Tourism Secretary Claudia Ruiz Massieu said that the government under the President Enrique Peña Nieto is working towards addressing a wide range of issues such as crime, human trafficking.

Mexico is developing cultural tourism because "our cultural heritage is one of the elements that differentiates us, so we position ourselves as a destination," Ruiz Massieu said.

The Secretary also stressed on Sustainable tourism as another area under development, with the protection of heritage sites being entrusted to the communities themselves so that the locals are also engaged and perceive them as assets.

Mexican Real estate sector which has grown manifolds in the last decade is also ripe for such practices. Already many developers in Puerto Vallarta real estate have taken lead in building condos and homes which are sustainable and green. It is hoped that with more initiatives from the Government, sustainable housing will become the norm rather than exception.
